NME Cool List 2005

Posted by Nicole at 09:50 AM December 21, 2005

Ok, it's that time of the year again to publice my unusual end of the year list. Just like last year it's all about coolness. That's why I call it the NME Cool List. NME stands for Nicole's Music End of the year list. Note: don't take this list TOO serious.

Wow, that was cool!
Gigs I've been to this year.

* Mystery Jets @ Sister Ray
I'll see them again many times next year. God, how much I love this band.
* The Kills @ Doornroosje (NL)
It was the first time I saw this band live. The (faked) tense on stage between Alison and Jamie was incredible. I could even feel it.
* Zongamin @ Koko
Very impressive.
* Patrick Wolf @ Ekko (NL)
Lovely, just lovely.
* Kaiser Chiefs @ Paradiso (NL)
Last ever gig in the Netherlands before moving to London. Phew, I went crazy! Jumping up and down.
* Spider Rico @ Noorderslag festival (NL)
Yes, Dutch rawk 'n' roll.
* The Faint @ Paradiso (NL)
At some point I thought I was the only one who was there to see The Faint. It felt a bit like my own private Faint party. F#ck those Bright Eyes fans. I love The Faint!
* Vive La Fete @ Doornroosje (NL)
Female singer with sexy long legs. Guy on mini motor. Lots of black hair. Vive La Fete jamsession.
* Oasis @ AB (BE)
What can I say about this gig? F#ck as cool!

Coolest all-repeat albums

* Mystery Jets' album
Ok, I know they haven't got an album out yet, but if you put all their singles/b-sides/remixes on one cd you have an album.
* Kaiser Chiefs - Employment
* Erol Alkan Bugged In Selection cd
Thank you, Erol.
* zZz - Sound Of zZz
* Rakes - Capture Release
* Patrick Wolf - Wind In The Wires
* Clor - Clor
* Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock And Roll
Album title of the year.

Note: in my opinion 2005 was more of an singles than album year.

Very cool songs

* Mystery Jets - you can't fool me dennis (Justice rmxxxx + original)
MY song of the year. This song is about me moving to London. Not really, but you know...
* Arcade Fire - Laika
Such a great song.
* Clor - Love & Pain
I fell in love with this song from the very first minute I heard it.
* Long Blondes - Giddy Stratospheres
You can get me on the dancefloor within a minute when playing this song.
* Franz Ferdinand - Do You Want To (Erol Alkan's Glam Racket mxxxx)
Well done Erol! I never knew an 'instrumental' version could do it so good on the dancefloor. Only the intro is a bit too long.
* Tomas Andersson - Washing Up (Tiga rmxxx)
Tigaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!
* Tiga - You Gonna Want Me
Tigaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!
* The Rakes - 22 Grand Job
Cool song from a cool band.
* Good Shoes - Never Meant To Hurt You
"Do you ever feel like you've broken someones heart, I do!! .... Iii, iii, iii, never meant to hurt you!!!!"

Supercool dj's

Erol Alkan
Surprise, surprise. Do I really have to tell why Erol is mentioned (again) in this years end of the year list?
Tiga
And finally I saw and heard the man dj. That was at Motel Mozaque and Trash. Wow!! The man is good.

You're so cool!

Thomas Troelsen (Superheroes singer/producer) and Karen O (YYYs singer).
Did I really name my two fish after Thomas and Karen?

Cool chick factor

Kate Jackson (Long Blondes singer)
She inspired me to wear cool neck scarves.

A cool night out

Trash
I'll love Trash forever.
Club NME
You can say a lot of things about NME, but their club is very cool. Definitely worth a visit if you like British guitarpop.
Afterskool Klub
ASK is definitely a fun night out. It's an all night indie disco party.
White Heat
I've only been here twice. They have a lot of good bands playing every Tuesday. I'll promise to go to White Heat more often in the new year.

Cool places on the internet

Trash board
Am I really in the top 10 of posters? It's the only board on the internet I post A LOT. I've already met a lot of nice people through the Trash board. Love you all.
Online record stores
Juno? Piccadilly Records? Pure Groove? Phonica? Rough Trade? I like these record stores, but my credit card doesn't.

Totally uncool

Arcade Fire
I really like the Arcade Fire. The fact I didn't see them live this year is totally uncool.
Frog
This must be the most uncool indie disco ever.

On their way to be cool

Mystery Jets
Ooooooooh, I love the Mystery Jets. They deserve it to be big next year.
The Pax
They look cool and they rawk! Yes, they are on their way to be officially cool.

That's it. Do post your own cool list in the comments thingy. Stay cool!
