Spotted: street art in Heerlen

Today I went on an adventure trip to Heerlen, which is approximately 3 hours away from where I live, but it was most definitely worth it. Last year a bunch of artists were in Heerlen town to paint, paint and paint. Oooh, an incredible line-up it was for sure. ROA, Resto, Skount, Lastplak, Jens Besser, Collin van der Sluijs etc. etc. What I did not expect was to spot work by Os Gemeos. I believe this was painted already some years ago...? My god, have I been spoiled today by all these amazing artworks. Like said before, it is definitely worth going there, even if you do not really live nearby Heerlen. Do hire a bike if you come by train.

Here is a selection of what I spotted. More photo's on Flickr.

The kids are the future! #streetart

The kids are the future. Yesterday a bunch of kids were taking part in a street art workshop at Vrolikstraat, Amsterdam. It was meant to be my chilling day, but I was still in my weeks of study stress mode, so I decided to get out and check out what was going on over there.

Besides a few pro artists doing there thing, some kids who live in the area grabbed a spraycan to let us show that they can do just the same. Oh my, there sure were a lot of creative young artists in the making there. One very young boy was so eager to do a bit of spraying himself, that he just grabbed a can and started spraying. Ok, maybe with a bit of help of the workshop organiser (one half of Anonymous Psychonauts), as he was a bit too young to do anything himself.

Yep! The kids are the future! At Vrolikstraat we saw the future.

Spotted: C215 & Nina in Amsterdam

Since a few weeks I finally own a bike in Amsterdam, and lives at Central Station when I am not in town. I love having a bike now. No more long walks and no more public transport. Earlier today I had a bit of free time in between two daily life things, so I decided to cycle around and spot some street art.

My mission was to find the newly dropped artworks by C215 and Nina, his eight year old daughter. My catch of today is as below. Also very very nice having seen Nina's debut in Amsterdam (video). I hope that when she visits Amsterdam in, let's say, five years, that her artwork is still there. Well, seeing the location, it could well still be there in five years.

Cool List 2011 - 31 songs that sum up 2011

An annual Cool List without music, can really not be an end of the year. So, here is my Spotify 2011 Cool List. 30 songs + 1 bonus track (Mehdi r.i.p. tribute) that sum up my year in music and what I have been listening to the most on Spotify.

I have been using my PopScene playlist on Spotify for a few years now to dump in songs that I like and bands that I have just discovered. From French electronica bangers to arty farty indie to happy making 'let's dance' music and so on... Seriously, I have no clue how to describe my music taste.

Anyway, here is the link for your happy Spotify listening hours. Listen: open.spotify.com/user/.... If you are not using Spotify (I think you should), go here to see the tracklist.

Cool List 2011 - Street art photography

In 2011 I travelled to London, Brussels and Gent for a bit of street art spotting. I secretly wish I could have travelled a bit more, but lets save that for next year. Berlin is on top of the list to visit in the new year. Besides these three cities, street art can also be found in Amsterdam and even Haarlem and Schiedam. I had the honour to see and document it all.

I am especially very very happy with the artwork that La Ira painted in front of my casa in Haarlem. Amsterdam had the honour of having had a few international artists visiting town and who, of course, left their trademark outside on the streets. On a sunny Friday in May I travelled to Schiedam, where Lastplak and co painted an enormous mural. If you travel by train between Den Haag and Rotterdam, you can spot it yourself. When being in London I was introduced to Stik, who had just finished a project with young children. Belgium has some damn fine street art. The eyes by Erick Hikups caught my attention when being in Brussels. Bue the Warrior clearly is the man in Gent.

Here are my ten favourite spotted street art works.

Erick Hikups in Brussels.

Before heading to Brussels I was kindly given a map of where to spot street art in Brussels. At each location it was a surprise as to what I would find there. This one by Erick Hikups was a very nice surprise. I had seen his work online before. It was amazing to finally see it in front of my own eyes. Because of this I invited him to come to Amsterdam for Project ASA.

Bue the Warrior in Gent.

Gent was always a ROA and Bue the Warrior town for me. What I did not know was that Bue the Warrior really is the dude of the town. His art is everywhere. This one I spotted from within the train. The photo was also taken from within the train.

Stik in London.

It was Wayne from LSD Magazine, who introduced me to Stik. He had just done a project with young children and taught them how to do graffiti by creating their own Stik people.

Phlegm in London.

Hackney Wick in London is a great place for street art, even though most of it has to be removed because of the location being close to the Olympics 2012 area. There is however one place where they will never remove the incredible art. I love this one by Phlegm.

Huge wall in Schiedam.

This wall is huge. I say HUGE! Lastplak invited me to come round and to take some photos and that of the work in progress. Immense!

La Ira in Haarlem.

I knew that something had to be done with this grey wall outside my casa. After having mentioned this to La Ira, he was there to paint it before I even realised it. Good job!! Sometimes I see people outside looking at it. I wonder what they are thinking...

Alice Pasquini & C215 in Amsterdam.

It is always nice having C215 in town and to see new cool street art in Amsterdam. Last August he did not come alone, but Alice Pasquini, who is an amazing artist herself, joined him. This is a collab between the two of them.

Ethos in Amsterdam.

It took Ethos aprox. 6 days to paint this. The result is incredible. I had been e-mailing with him before. It was nice to finally meet him and to hear his story.

Gaia in Amsterdam.

Gaia in Amsterdam?? Woot? I like meeting artist, who amaze me. Gaia is a talented and clever young man, who does his research very well before creating a piece of art. It was a pleasure having met him. And he even pasted one of his works in Haarlem. Nice one!

Sweet Toof in Amsterdam. As part of Project ASA.

This one by Sweet Toof is my favourite artwork that was painted at Project ASA 2011. Just... Wow!!!
