C215's Midnight Dreams at Signal Gallery

'This is completely different from last year,' is what my London friend says to me when entering Signal Gallery. The previous year we visited C215's solo show called Shoeshiners at the same gallery. Midnight Dreams is his second solo show there and is running until 7th August. Shoeshiners was all about his past travelling adventures and the people and places he visited. Midnight Dreams is inspired by his childhood memories in Orleans, a city 130 km south of Paris.

The story behind Midnight Dreams starts with this cocktail bar business card, which is exhibited at the front side of the gallery. The man behind C215, Christian Guemy, happens to be in the gallery when we visit. He can hardly remember his teenage years, but he knows exactly what his first spray on a wall was. When he was 14 his uncle owned a cocktail bar. He asked his nephew if he would write Midnight Dreams on the wall. It was an advertisement with a cheesy girl's face and hair made of fruits. From the age of 16 to 20 he was living at the second floor of his uncles club. He took a lot of drugs and especially LSD. His show at Signal Gallery is his meditation about this strange period in his life. Guemy: 'Art aims at showing invisible things. It is strange for me to look back in the past.'

In a previous interview on CFYE, Guemy says that 2010 is all about him exploring new fields. With Midnight Dreams he has given his art more color than ever. Yes, colors rule the show in every single artwork. Details are perfectly colored and have given the paintings an extra dimension and unique style. What strikes me is that women mostly rule in his artworks. Perhaps it is because women play a big part in his life? Of course it can only be his 7 year old daughter Nina who is the star in at least a couple of artworks exhibited in the gallery. His most recent memories are those from his recent trip to Italy. The paintings Volare and Cantare (as in that famous song) show these memories. Cantare showing his downside period in Milan and Volare when he found love in Rome. My favourite of the whole show is a painting that is not even for sale, but painted on the wall outside. It is an image of a woman with very mysterious eyes that makes you curious what is inside.

Every C215 show is a must see and so is Midnight Dreams. Signal Gallery is located on Curtain Road in East London. The show is on until 7th August 2010.

Some gigs I went to in the past weeks

Yeah yeah, not much is happening nowadays on that website of mine. I am quite busy with Project ASA and my study. As from July I will have quiet moments again. I promise to make PopScene look a bit more attractive as from July. Maybe.

Anyway, if you haven't kept an eye on my Flickr, you might have missed the few gigs I went to recently. I took my camera with me to all gigs and here are some photo's of me seeing Chilly Gonzales, Jamie Lidell and Liars.

Once there was Poney Poney, a band from Paris. Now there is Jamaica, also from Paris with two Poney Poney ex-members. Their single 'I think I like U 2' has been produced by Xavier de Rosnay, who we know as one half of Justice, and Peter Franco. The above video tells the story of the 'rise and fall' of the two Jamaica members, Antoine and Flo, and is directed by So-Me. In the past So-Me directed video's for Justice and Ed Banger Records artists.
