 About

Here you are on the about page of Nicole Blommers. Some know her as that young lady who has an immense love for music, others as a street art fanatic, keen photographer, (radio) deejay or because of her PopScene weblog.

In retrospective

Nicole worked in radio for over six years before making the big move to London. Not only was she the editor of a daily afternoon show in Arnhem, but also the producer and host of the infamous weekly radio show PopScene.  This was dedicated to new musical talent and perceived by many as a credible alternative to the mainstream.  As a mark of success the show was linked to a monthly club night and weblog, with a dedicated following.

At the beginning of 2004 her mission was to do more for the Arnhem music scene. Nicole and fellow enthusiasts started the 3VOOR12/Arnhem-Nijmegen website. The process of Luxor venue was being covered, she gave local bands a boost and most of all gave a face to the Arnhem music scene. As a thank you, she was nominated to become ‘Arnhemmer of the month’, which she won in September 2005. Oh, did you see the TV-show Popquiz-a-go-go for which she was asked to participate?

In 2005 Nicole felt the pull of London and moved there. She likes to say it was Trash (a weekly club night run by Erol Alkan) that made her want to live the London life. Those who know her well know that it was because of the vibrant music scene and the fact that London is ‘the place to be’;  Many bands she saw live, many she discovered, many she saw grow and many she wrote about on her weblog.

When being asked to write for Glamcult about new British bands, she could of course not say no. She was the first to interview and write about (for example) Klaxons, Foals, Lightspeed Champion, Late of the Pier and Simian Mobile Disco. Also did she write a London scene column for Oor and rambled about her city every other week on Kink FM.

Besides writing, Nicole is a keen photographer. Ever since she bought her first digital camera in 2001 photography has been part of her life and self taught many new technics. In the Autumn of 2007 she decides to upgrade her camera to a Nikon D80 and that's when the fun really started. Taking snapshots at gigs, art events and when going on urban exploring adventures.

In May 2008 she found a new love in street art. She said ‘Oh wow!’ when visiting Cans Festival. She said ‘Oh wow!’ when doing the Tate Modern Street Art Walk. She said ‘Oh wow!’ when wandering around her beloved Shoreditch to discover coolness on walls, shutters and in galleries. Another obsession was added to her ever growing list.

In July 2009 the time came to leave her city behind and move back to the other side of the North Sea. Too many good memories she has about her stay in London and there are not that many people who can say that they fully lived the London life as she did. Ooh, she did!! Seeing lots of live bands, having very little sleep, go out on weekdays, discovering new cool things each week and exploring the city upside down.

Presently Nicole is studying Media, Information and Communication at the Hogeschool van Amsterdam. Her writings for Glamcult continue for both the magazine as their weblog. As promised before moving back to her home country, her growing interest in street art is to be expanded even more and more. Shortly after her return back in Netherlands she met up with Jarno Gnirrep. So, Project Amsterdam Street Art was born. Amsterdam Street Art, or also known as ASA, is all about street art with a mission to give it that extra boost in Amsterdam. In June 2010 she and fellow ASA colleagues organized their first street art event and in June 2011 the second edition is taking place.

Another mission is that she wants to get better in her photography, learn the French language and write a book about street art in Europe. Who knows what else she will come across on her way to accomplish her missions? Whatever the future will bring and wherever she will live, Nicole will always stay very fanatic about everything she loves, likes, adores and admires.
